In this article we will explain how to apply for undergraduate degree in the USA.
Method 1: Direct Admission
Applying directly to an American university requires thorough and extensive preparation, but the effort is well worth it. Typically, applications for undergraduate programs in the U.S. are accepted from October to January for students who wish to begin their studies the following
September.
Required Documents and Tests:
- High School Diploma: Students must present a complete high school diploma with grades (or transcripts for the last three years).
- English Language Tests: These tests are mandatory for international students applying to U.S. universities:
- TOEFL or IELTS: Required for all international students.
- Other Tests:
- SAT: Necessary for all ranked universities and often for securing substantial scholarships.
- SAT Subject Tests: Some universities may require two or three subject-specific tests.
- ACT: Accepted as an alternative to the SAT.
Letters of Recommendation:
Play a crucial role in the application process. A recommendation letter from a teacher who knows you personally should highlight your positive qualities, strengths, and other relevant information.
Motivational Essay:
This is a critical part of your application, providing the faculty with significant insights into you as an individual. It helps distinguish your application from other worthy candidates.
Interviews:
Some U.S. universities also require an interview with a university representative. These interviews are generally informal and provide an opportunity for more detailed information exchange. The interviewer will assess your abilities and interests.

Method 2: International Year One
For students interested in applying to U.S. universities without taking complex tests and with lower academic performance, preparatory programs are available.
International Year One (IY1):
This is a first-year program for international students that allows for easier admission to U.S. universities. The International Year One program is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree in the U.S. but has lower requirements for English language proficiency and academic performance. This means that international students can complete a full year of academic subjects while improving their English. There is no need
to take the SAT for this program. After successfully completing the program, students can move directly to the second year of their undergraduate studies at the university where they started.
Advantages of the International Year One Program:
- Equivalent to the first year of study in the U.S. (freshman year) but with lower English language requirements.
- Minimum English requirement is only IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 55.
- No SAT or ACT tests are required for admission to the program.
- Opportunity to advance to the second year of a chosen specialty after completing the program.
- Small classes and an individualized approach.
